COLLEGE “THE FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE”

Feature Image: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCVlJg5z3dc

Now that I have one year of college under my belt, I feel that it’s my duty (as a somewhat- not really upperclassman) to help prepare all the incoming freshman. Prepare them for what you may ask? Well, the cold reality of higher education of course.

Freshman are sooo cute and kinda annoying. They’re bright eyed, bushy tailed and excited about life. Like little baby chicks before they realized that the farm isn’t their happily ever after, but preparation for the real world. Real world really meaning dinner plates.

So here are 6 things I dreamed college would be as a freshman, but ended up with reality instead.

1. Food

Here at the U of A, instead of one main cafeteria with restaurants scattered around, we have many fast food restaurants with one cafeteria… somewhere on campus. Now, I wasn’t expecting a five-star restaurant with Wolfgang Puck behind the stove flipping burgers. But I at least thought there’d be more effort put towards keeping my non-picky taste buds satisfied. Don’t get me wrong I’ve still gained the freshman 15 and probably more, but it’s safe to say you grow tired of the food on campus pretty quickly.

2. The Glow Up

You know how the ugly duckling grew up and became the beautiful graceful swan? Yeah, I thought that was going to happen to me. I thought I was finally going to go from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. Turns out in reality the ugly duckling turns into the fugly duckling. See no one tells you that the stress from school was going to make you break out and stress eat your feelings. Now the only glow in my life is the illuminance of my MacBook screen as I watch Netflix  alone on Friday nights in my dorm.

3. Relationship

I like most girls dreamed of coming to college and finding that perfect guy my first year. I thought I’d meet him in one of my lectures, at a party or even in the line at Panda. Pretty naive of me to think that three months during the summer would turn a high school boy into a college man. The only difference between high school guys and freshman/sophomores college guys is that they have a bigger playground to play games. They’re not trying to settle down and the truth is neither should you. I know we girls like to think of the future but you just got here. Live in the moment, college is where you find yourself, make sure you find you before you start looking for the one.

4. Academics

I knew college was going to be difficult academically [and it is] just not in the way I assumed. I didn’t change my major 100x’s and the course load can get hectic but I still find a way to make it through. College is hard in the sense that it’s all on you. More people are going to college, so it’s up to me to stand out and get involved with things that put me above the rest. I’ve done this by getting an internship my freshman year, joining different clubs/organizations and constantly pushing myself to do more. Having a degree isn’t enough anymore what else you got?

5. Homesickness

I never thought I’d be homesick but little did I know that homesickness would hit me like a freight train. When I left for school my mom told me to call her every day. I thought she was being ridiculous, “every day isn’t that a little excessive” I’d ask her. I now call my mom two to three times a day. First semester I’d constantly ask to come home but with Minnesota being 1,646 miles away and a plane ticket costing around $500, going home on a regular was not an option. I missed my family, home cooked meals and my soft fluffy bed. Good thing I brought my buddy Cotton with me to remind me of home.

6. Safety

All jokes aside it’s become more prevalent that college campuses aren’t as safe as we think. I know going into my first year I got the talk from my parents to stay safe and watch who I hang out with, which I did. I made amazing friends who I trusted. But that’s not always the case and I want you incoming freshman to keep that in mind. Really take care of yourselves when your; out on the weekends, walking home late from the library or just in your dorm. Be mindful of your surroundings and once again stay safe.

Now these tips aren’t to frighten or discourage you. Everyones college experience is different and what you make of it is up to you. College may be stressful, hard and scary but it’s also fun, adventurous and well worth it. The experiences, memories and friendships you make will come in handy in the real world. Or at minimum be great stories to tell the grandkids. So spread your wings baby chick and fly.  Just kidding you’re a domesticated chicken you can’t fly.

Disposable Trends.. What the Hell is that?

As most of you know I’m a freshman in college studying broadcast journalism with a concentration in entertainment and media. I’ve been so lucky to get an amazing fellowship with the company Inavizion media.

I work as a social media intern on a web series called Disposable Trends.

Disposable Trends is a commentary web series focused on recent hot topics in entertainment, Hollywood, sports and politics. Basically, any topics relevant at the moment, but soon forgotten in a couple of days or weeks. [disposable trends.. see what they did there] Video’s are posted frequently on the Disposable Trend youtube page. [link to page here]

My job as a social media intern is to increase the subscription and following on all Disposable Trends social media platforms. Besides Youtube, this includes Facebook and Twitter.

I share my opinions on new videos, share links on my Facebook page and tweet up a storm whenever a new video is posted. The main goal is to get the word out to as many people as possible. I “work” [doesn’t feel like work] for Jesse Mogle and Thomas Jordan who host and edit all Disposable Trend videos.

Here are a couple of their recent videos

These guys are hilarious and the videos are amazing. So do yourself a favor and go follow the DT pages on Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter. Also, while you’re at it follow Jesse and Thomas as well.

How to survive your least favorite lecture.

Currently, I’m sitting in my African Religions lecture. Watching a video in a language that I haven’t paid enough attention to figure out yet.

I have to be honest, this is how it usually is with this lecture. I walk in and sit next to my friend Ashley in our unassigned, assigned seats.[kids you know what I’m talking about]

Then I spend the next hour scrolling through social media. Wishing I’d catch my big break already and finally, be able leave these foldable lecture chairs behind me. [Jk education is important STAY IN SCHOOL]

Although that’s been working for me so far. I wouldn’t recommend it for the long run. That’s why I came up with four tips to keep you focused during that insanely boring class.

1. Pens & Highlighters

I love using colored pens and highlighters during lectures. They help brighten up my notes and makes it easier to look at when studying. You can even use certain colors or designs to categorize.

This is by far one of my tamer jobs.

I had one class last semester and it was all info based. At times, it got so bad that my pages were all doodles.

But they’ve never been this awesome!

2. Sit In the front

If you tend to take long naps during class then I’d recommend sitting in the front. The likely hood that you’re not paying attention while sitting in the front is slim for a couple of reasons

Be like Rih Rih, Karrueche, P-Diddy, Jay-Z, Beyonce and Kim, and sit in the front.

1. You feel like the professor is judging you. [which they are]

2. And because they are judging you this can lead to you being singled out in front of the whole class. [Trust me professors love doing that]

3. It also holds you accountable for showing up to class [your professor will notice]

I came to class a little late so I chose to sit in the back

Today I came in late and chose to sit in the back. Not the best idea since I’m writing this post when I should be learning about salmon migration.

But seriously guys sitting in the front keeps you on track but also comes with a ton of benefits.
1. The professor sees your face every day. Which helps when they’re deciding if they should curve your grade or not. [Ex. If you’re on the border of an A & B]
2. Also, you build a relationship with your professor. Which comes in handy when you’re looking for a letter of recommendation.

I know from personal experience. This happened to me on two occasions last semester.

3. Block social media

Screen Shot 2016-03-02 at 3.49.28 PM

Now if you’re like me [and every college student I’ve ever seen in lecture] you have a tendency to get distracted by your phone or laptop. The two things I usually see people doing are
1. ONLINE SHOPPING
2. Netflix
3.Social media scrolling

My weakness is social media. Poison of choice, Facebook!! Here are a couple of apps that can help prevent distractions and keep you focused. [thanks to Ecampus for the help. If you want to read the full article click here]

  • SelfControl– The free Mac application lets users choose specific sites to block.[the max 24hrs] This one is perfect for those of us who love online shopping and watching Netflix.
  • Freedom– Blocks users from connecting to the internet for up to 8 hours. It’s Mac, Android and Windows compatible.
  • Focus– Another Mac app that blocks Facebook and Reddit for a desired period of time.
  • Netsanity– Netsanity is a phone app that helps keep you focused by blocking all your chosen apps. Social media, games, dating and messaging apps can all be controlled on Netsanity. [click the link to see the list of app]

I haven’t used any of these apps but I’ve already downloaded Netsanity and Selfcontrol.

4. Don’t watch the clock

Looking at the clock makes time feel as if it’s at a standstill. I rarely check the time and when I do I always regret it. At least, when you don’t know what time it is you can trick yourself into believing you’re almost done.

5. Think of the future

We’re all in school for one reason. To get a degree and be able to work your dream job. If all else fails that’s the only motivation you need to stay focused.

For me the goal is to become an entertainment journalist. There’s not anyone or anything that’ll keep me away from reaching my goals. You have to be awake in order to chase your dreams.

Sending Peace, Love and Faith your way

Sincerely,

Nathel Kayy
